GWR Goods Wagons, Tourret (latest edition 1999?)
« on: January 07, 2012, 07:25:20 PM »
Does any of you possess the "enlarged" edition of the above book which was (I believe) published c.1999 and is now out of print?

My copy is the "combined Parts 1 & 2" edition which I bought in 1986 but I understand the later edition contains many more photos and drawings.

Which brings me to the point!

I have been searching through all the Tourret and Jim Russell GW wagon books which I have for a photograph of a "Loriot M" (diagram G14) but have drawn a blank.
After "Googling" (and spending a couple of hours trawling through the results) I found a reference to a drawing and photo which is said to be on page 152 of the "enlarged edition" of GWR Goods Wagons by Tourret.

I have recently completed a GRS kit (modified / extra detail) for this wagon but have been unable to confirm the following points.

1) The position of the cast number plate.
2) Position of the label clip.
3) The layout of the lettering.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
John.

John, I have said book and will email you the results in the next few days when I've scanned it into my PC.

Looks very nice John - and didn't take you long!  Look forward to reading a review and your views on the suitability of resin to represent a steel wagon.  The whitemetal castings look better than some.

The only thing I really dont like on GRS waggons is the buffers. White metal heads look awfull and the castings for the buffer bodies are poor.

Don't Walsall make the same type?

Ian :Thank you, I look forward to receiving the scans.

Hornbeam : The additional detailing involved adding the angle strip along the lower edge of the sideframes (white plastic card glued and riveted to underside); the riveted angles fixing the triangular outriggers to the sideframes (14 items were cast in whitemetal); the spring "bump stops" (in plastic angle and plastic card); replacing the etched brass V-hangers (wrong shape) with cast items, modifying brake shoes/blocks (wrong shape supplied) and adding the second set (not included in kit); additional brake rigging (triangular yokes - cast in whitemetal - between blocks plus lever/rods).
Also substituted larger split pins to hold chain cleats to headstock and added the chains and shackles (cast brass from Brandbright).
I still have to add the number plates and label clips (not supplied in kit) when I have details of positioning.
The kit was the easiest to build GRS kit I have come across ..... the main part is a single piece moulding.

Mike,
The axlebox castings were fine (just needed drilling out for brass bearings), the spring/hanger castings are a bit rough but passable.
The buffer set in the kit was atrocious....looked fine on the outside but the guides were so poorly cast internally that it was impossible to drill out the housings with the 8mm drill, the thin sides were simply torn apart as the drill tried to remove the big uneven "lumps"(and that was turning the drill by hand). Fortunately, I had a set of identical GRS buffers in the spares box and these were very cleanly cast and were drilled through without any problems.
Walsall do make cast brass GW self-contained buffers.

A full review has been prepared for the Newsletter.

John.

Ian (Blagdon),

I have been told following by Paul Bartlett (which hopefully will help you locate the info).

Plate 149 in Atkins, A. G. Beard, W. Tourret, R. (1998) GWR Goods Wagons A historical survey. Tourret Publishing, Abingdon, Oxon. 530 pages ISBN 0-905878-07-8 has a Russell photo of 42200 which shows the label clip, on the curb rail which is unusual.

If the other reference I found is correct, Plate 149 should be on page 152!

Regards,
John.
