Hi all,Being a newy to this forum i am sure someone knows?? Huh I am hoping to build an Emu using etched sides already in my sticky palms,of the LBSCR 4 car emu 4506 as in late May 1958 The 2 motor coaches are no problem but the trailers, both 10 comp. are from photos it appears that all the compartments are similar in width, being different to the LSWR type which do vary.Does anyonyknow of drawings of these trailers or the width of the compartments please Mike king has helped as far as possible but these particlar coaches evade me All the best  Ron  Robinson

Your answer is -"maybe(?)"...

I have a drawing of an SR motor brake third of the 4EPB type built from the early 1950's by BR on old SR underframes. The sets had 62 ft 6 in long MDTC of 39 tons, with 62ft long 28 ton trailers. There were 82 seats in the motor cars and 102 seats in the trailers, all second class.

Having checked my old 1950s 'ABC' it lists the trailers for 4506 as being 62ft x 8ft with 100 seats,
which suggests 10 compartments, 5-aside.

I have also checked my old edition of 'Southern Electric' but whereas it gives full details of the original LBSC 'AC' stock, it gives only brief details of the SR conversion to the 2-coach DC sets, which retained the side corridors within the coaches (i.e. not gangwayed within the sets). I remember these working the
Wimbledon to West Croydon via Mitcham service in the early 1950s, before being replaced by new 2-EPBs.

The DC 3-SUBs which appeared in Southern days (upgraded to 4-SUB post war), I think were produced by direct conversion of old steam stock rather than from the AC stock.

I know I have more material on these units 'somewhere' but my filing system is rather haphazard!

Regards,
John.

From a photo of 4506 it appears that all 4 cars are ex-LBSC stock, visible from the long grab handles on the doors and the matching arc roof profiles. Sets 4501 and 4511 were similar but one of the trailers in each case appears to be ex-LSWR, visible from the different roof profile.

Some ex-LBSC trailers were rebuilt on 62ft underframes from all thirds, but others were originally composites. Judging by the even spacing of the door hinges on the trailers, these appear to have been all-thirds in set 4506.

When the 4-SUB's were formed from 3-SUB's, extra trailers appeared from all over the place, including ex-LSW, Ex-SECR and even new Bulleid steel cars, which looked really incongruous.

If you would like to go into interminable details about SR electric stock, please contact me!

Hi Ted,
A bit late maybe, but another good source of data about matters Southern Electric is the SEmG group on Yahoo!
Cheers,
Tony.
